Donut Enter
(Penny Lane Book Club)Mystery & ThrillerReviewed 13 Mar 2024
Donut Enter is the second instalment in the Penny Lane Book Club Mystery series, continuing the adventures of the lovable Daisy McCartney as she finds herself embroiled in another unexpected death. This time the stakes are higher, as Daisy finds herself a prime suspect in the murder – not ideal as she tries to figure out where her relationship with a police officer is going, and juggles her responsibilities at law school, the hair salon where she works, and the museum her mother drags her into volunteering for.
This book introduces the supernatural as an interesting additional dimension to the story, adding to Daisy’s challenges as she tries to keep it together under pressure. The central mystery is well constructed with sufficient hints to allow the reader to form some theories as to the identity of the perpetrator. Daisy is an endearing and relatable lead for the story, whom we can sympathise with when things go wrong.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. It’s hits the mark as a cosy mystery that gives us some up and downs without straying far into the darker side of crime and murder, and for me was a step up from the first instalment (Scone Cold Murder) in terms of how effectively I was drawn into trying to solve the mystery. Recommended!
