My Summer Triumph
Children's BooksReviewed 29 Nov 2018
A young girl experiences life at summer camp in a throwback to more innocent times.
This simple but charming story follows the adventures of 12 year-old Kaila as she goes to summer camp for the first time. She experiences doubts about how she will cope with camp life, and meets with some struggles along the way, but ultimately learns some valuable lessons and has some unforgettable experiences.
This book has a deeply nostalgic feel: although I don’t recall it ever being specified, I got the impression it was set at least 20 years ago if not longer. For me, the innocent charm of a simpler time contributed a great deal of the book’s appeal. However, while times may change, some of the trials and triumphs of growing up remain the same, and there are many aspects of Kaila’s adventure which would ring true to a child of today.
I would put the optimal age for a reader of this book at around 9, because I feel older readers might find the action a little too safe for their taste, but of course it depends on the individual reader.
Recommended for anyone seeking to relive (or share with a child) some of those summer memories.
